You must be wondering why I’m even writing this post. Is that possible that internet is possible without hyperlinks. The probable answer is No. Talking about blogging, all good bloggers round the world link each other (or say original source) to credit their work with own version of that story.
But the very essence of weblogging, Online Journalism etc. is under scanner with an interesting case at US federal court where GateHouse Media Inc. and The New York Times Co. will be facing each other and reason as stated on ReadWritWeb is:
GateHouse (one of the largest publishers of community newspapers in the United States) claims Boston.com(of The New York Times Co.) is violating copyright and trademark laws by republishing headlines and lead sentences from GateHouse Wicked Local sites on Boston.com.
On a personal note I think:
1. Weblogging may die if we are not allowed to quote someone.(Like I have done above to ReadWriteWeb).
2. Plagiarism is bad but every story on Internet is inspired by some one. Like I got inspired by RWB and it got this news from here.
3. But when viewing it from a corporate (involivng two or more established companies) angle it has some different implications too. As Joe rightly says : in the process of driving more traffic, you are also driving more traffic to a competitor
So this chain goes on but GateHouse’s case can be understandable through point 3. But as many sites like Techmeme, Google News, also use the same thing to collect news and all. Corporate angle is a different one but I fear that Weblogs are not under any threat with this case.(or its future implications).
