Effects of TV and Computer Gaming on Health and Gaming Trends

Can playing videos games produce as much as activity as walking, skipping and jogging? The answer to the readers playing video games may be joyful but for parents out there please loosen your pockets to spend money when your kids demand a new video game.

According to a recent study, Researchers have found active gaming to be as effective as walking, skipping and jogging & it may even burn more calories than walking on a treadmill says American Academy of Pediatrics. So gaming is healthy.

Another major worry was that the kids playing games spent less time with their parents. But in this context let me share an interesting study which took place at University of Texas at Austin on nearly 1500 adolescents and teenagers who were active gamers to their non playing counterparts.

To a huge surprise there is not much difference between gamers and non gamers in the time they spent with their parents. Now seeing gender specific trends, among girl gamers and non gamers there was not even a single minute difference of the time they spent in their reading activities.

Coming to boys, there is a slightest of difference of 2 minutes per hour of time between gamers and non gamers. Also the time spent in home work by the boys and girls gamers & non gamers is not much. But these all aspects and studies have further strangulated Reseachers minds so as to what should be concluded by it.

As far as I think mentally gamers may gain somethings but physically they are left lot behind. I myself was an active gamer at teenage but it resulted in major weakening of optical nerves of eyes. Today I wear spectacle because of it. Plus those arificial games can never replace the freshness earned in playing outdoor games.

Coming to spiritual angle life is itself a game. Gurbani in this aspect says: “Aavan Jaavan Ik khel Banaya”( Meaning:- that coming and going of humans is itself a big game played by lord). When life is itself a big game to play and we get played by five vices(Sexual desire[Kaam], Anger[Kroadh], Greed[Lobh], Emotional Attachment[Moh] and Egotism[Ahankar]) every now and then.

Why not use the youth energy and make them participate in social activities so that they contribute to the society and develop themselves as better humans ahead. Such kinds of spiritual learning becomes more important in countries where mental peace is less and divorce rate is high. This will help the couples enjoin too and have a happy living.

My suggestion to game makers is to create the games which give kids and gamers some spiritual education. This way we can maintain the interest of kids but also give them the source to learn for living peacefully and happily.

So Game on your life!
