Experience next generation Grid Computing Technology with BOINC

Use the idle time on your computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) to cure diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research. Amazed!! Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing or simply named BOINC is a program that lets you donate your idle computer time to science projects like SETI@home, Climateprediction.net, Rosetta@home, World Community Grid, and many others.

This is fine example of the next generation grid or distributed computing in which far away nodes are connected via internet to work in combination on a joint project. We know that for huge projects nobody can have so much space. BOINC is basically a software that can use the unused CPU cycles on a computer, to do scientific computing— (what you don’t use of your computer).

BOINC consists of a server system and client(you) that communicate with each other to distribute, process, and return work units. It cost you nothing but one can learn a lot things like knowing about latest world projects, server sharing, network IPs, distributed computing, Inter networking and off course you are helping the world for a better tomorrow. Currentl going Projects using BOINC Framework are:

* Einstein@Home — search for spinning neutron stars (also called pulsars) using data from the LIGO and GEO 600 gravitational wave detectors.

* Cell Computing — for biomedical research.

* Malaria Control — for stochastic modeling of the clinical epidemiology and natural history of Plasmodium falciparum malaria.

* World Aids Project – trying to solve deadly aids

* XtremLab — Measures the free resources available on desktop PC’s involved in large-scale distributed computing. Results will be used to improve the design of systems, such as BOINC

* HashClash@home — extends both theoretical and experimental results on collision generation for the MD5 and SHA1 hash functions

To contribute and learn about this exciting technology you just have to follow these 3 steps:

1. Create User Name and Password

2. Choose your project

3. download BOINC

and you are connected to the world. Be a part of this exciting journey. You not only help yourself but the world. It’s safe, secure, and easy
