Open Source Screen Capture Software : CamStudio, Wink, Adobe Captivate

A screen capture is an image taken by the computer to record the visible items displayed on the monitor or a visual output device. In this post we bring you a comprehensive list of free open source screen capture software as demanded by our readers of Digital World. Though there are a lot of softwares in the market available for screen capping but the ones I’m discussing here are among the best and those which we are majorly using as industry standards. I hope you will like these softwares.

1. CamStudio: It is my first choice and is an open source, free and fairly powerful, Screen Capture Software. It can record all screen and audio activity on your computer and convert it to Flash. You can also change resolution, window size, follow a section of the window using your mouse. The best advantage of this software lies in the fact that you can produce avi files which you can use for your professional software marketing of your products. So go ahead and use Camstudio.

2. Adobe Captivate: Instead of recording video, it ‘screengrabs’ the window at change points and records mouse movements as vectors. It only records fluid actions as video (scrolling, etc.). Resulting files have significantly smaller footprint and almost lossless appearance. Plus, since mouse movements are vectors, it allows you to define length of ‘frames’ after the capture is finished, so you can add appropriate voice over or descriptions.Though its not free to download and downloading may take 5 to 6 hrs, but you can try its trial as its worth downloading when we talk about its features.

3. Wink: My third choice is Wink which is a tutorial and presentation creation software which is freeware with multi language support , cross platform support with high compression features.Plus you can also include your own voice in your presentation. So go ahead and use Wink.

So enjoy the new world of screen capture and please give us your valuable feedback so that we keep writing good articles.

You also have Camtasia Studio. While not free, you do have a free 30 day trial period with which you can fully use it. Can be downloaded here from camtasia-guide

  2. Hi Peter,
Thanks for your comments, well Camtasia Studio is also a good software in this series with a bonus point of its support to ipod, iphone users. Its used to deliver screencasts to iphone and ipod users which is a distinct feature itself. so its trial version is also very helpful.Hope to give you more articles like this in future as well, till then happy weekend.

I think the heading is not clear. Only one of the three presented was actually open source.

    However, thanks for the article!
